Many still live in darkness today and so we must proclaim this light that is shed abroad in our own hearts and point them to the hope we have in Christ and this “ hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Rom 5:5). Jesus, being the light of the world, came into the world so that they would not need to stay in darkness but might be brought into the light, thereby receiving eternal life by repentance and faith. This verse is very much like that in Luke chapter one and John chapter one. John 12:46 “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” Those who were in darkness were sitting in darkness and the shadow of death was upon them but Jesus brought light “ to guide our feet into the way of peace” but it cost Him His life.

Jesus came to bring light into a dark, sin-stained world and that’s why He is often referred to as the light of the world (John 8:12). Luke 1:79 “to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
